Whether you subscribe to the 4-day work week or the old 5-day workweek we all agree that the best thing this pandemic has brought us is working from home (Zoom mishaps included). There is nothing quite as satisfying as attending a meeting in your jammies. That being said, I find that when working from home the biggest challenge I’m faced with is what seat I want to occupy. There’s something about where you’re sitting that sets the whole tone for how your work session is gonna go. If I sit on the chair at my desk, I’m very stiff. I may be more alert but I’m definitely uncomfortable (and what good is working from home if you’re not comfortable). If I sit on the couch in my room, I’m in the right vibe, but I’m also likely to turn on Netflix at any moment and catch up on the latest season of Emily in Paris. If I’m in bed, I’m halfway to sleep. A dining table might solve this dilemma or might bring on too many memories of taking dars khusoosi in Maths/Arabic (and thus shit on the whole endeavour). Should I even be working from my bedroom? Is a question I find myself asking a lot. According to feng shui principles the room you rest in should be separated from the room you work in, even if it’s just by a paravon or something similar. So, what do we do about this working from home situation?
It’s a tough decision to make and one that we who believe in the power of spatial energy don’t take lightly. In fact, we can learn a lot from the art of feng shui on how to arrange our rooms for a more productive time (I say this as I sit on the couch bent over my laptop).
Some tips for a healthier work from home situation:
- Face the closest natural light source
- Sit at a desk (preferably a solid one).
- Place your desk close to the entry, so that you can see the full room but not in line with the door (this is called the commanding position, and is meant to increase your sense of power)
- Place a mirror above your head to uplift your chi
- Declutter your desk
- Incoroporate plants and water elements
- Allow room for flow
For a more in-depth literature, check some of the resources at the end of this article. As for me I will be taking up residence by the desk in my room, discomfort be damned (I have yet to invest in a spatial separator). And please always remember to hydrate, take breaks and go outside! Hope your meetings aren’t killing you.
Much love,
